The former Ryland Memorial School of Art, West Bromwich - A Sandwell Gem!

The Ryland Memorial School of Art was built in 1902 on Lodge Road in West Bromwich. Until 2012 it was part of Sandwell College. It has been the British Muslim School since 2017.

Where was the Ryland Memorial School of Art?

What is now the British Muslim School is at Lodge Road, West Bromwich, B70 8NX. It's now the Sandwell Grand Masjid.

In brief

This red brick building on Lodge Road in West Bromwich, was built as an Art school in 1902 by Wood & Kendrick of Birmingham. It had been part of Sandwell College, as the Ryland Building until the early 2010s (before the college moved to a modern building on the West Bromwich Ringway). Empty for a few years, by 2017 it had become the British Muslim School and Latifiah Fultali Complex. By the 2020s it's now the Sandwell Grand Masjid

Ryland Memorial School - history

The Ryland Memorial School of Art was built in 1902 by Wood & Kendrick of Birmingham of red brick, with ashlar dressings and slate roofs.

It remained an art school well into the 20th century.

Probably by the 1990s, it became part of Sandwell College's West Bromwich Campus, and was known as the Ryland Building.

However by 2011, Sandwell College was having a new building built at the West Bromwich Ringway and Spon Lane, which opened by 2012, and the building remained empty until 2016-17, when it became the British Muslim School and Latifiah Fultali Complex.

The building is now a mosque called the Sandwell Grand Masjid.
