Jerry Lee Lewis performed at the town hall in 1964, and more recently has been used by the People's Orchestra who give regular performances.

The town hall was the seat of local government as the headquarters of the county borough of West Bromwich.

Initially Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council was based here when formed in 1974, but a more modern building opened on Freeth Street in Oldbury during 1989, known as the Sandwell Council House.

As of January 2024, the entire Town Hall is behind scaffolding for restoration work.
