Langley Green Station - A Sandwell & West Midlands Gem!

Langley Green Station is in Oldbury, Sandwell, on the Snow Hill Lines between Smethwick Galton Bridge and Stourbridge Junction. It opened in 1885. Trains every half an hour.

Where is Langley Green Station?

Langley Green Station is at Western Road, Langley Green, West Midlands, B69 4LZ. It is close to Oldbury.

In brief

The Great Western Railway opened a station at Langley Green near Oldbury in May 1885 on their line from Birmingham Snow Hill to Stourbridge Junction. There used to be a GWR branch from here to Oldbury (but it closed in 1915). Then from Smethwick to Snow Hill was closed in 1972 but diverted to Birmingham New Street. Until in 1995 when the line from Birmingham Snow Hill was restored with the opening of the Jewellery Line. During the week, there is usually a train every half an hour. It is close to the Titford Canal.

There was also a short branch line to Oldbury from the Great Western Railway, with it's own platforms at Langley Green, but the Oldbury branch was closed to passengers in March 1915.

You can still see the stub of the former branch line from Langley Green, just a bit of wasteland now, fenced off behind platform 2.

After the Beeching Cuts, the old Birmingham Snow Hill station was closed and demolished by 1972, this led to the line beyond Smethwick West being closed, and it was diverted into Birmingham New Street until 1995.

When the Jewellery Line was completed and opened between Birmingham Snow Hill (reopened and rebuilt in 1987) and Smethwick Galton Bridge in 1995, the line towards Worcester via Kidderminster once again went through Langley Green.

The station building at platform 2 is quite modern, it has a Centro logo, with a small clock tower and weather vane.

From Western Road, when you leave the station, there is a bridge over the former Oldbury Branch Line, not far from Langley Green Station.
